NGA Summer Conference 2008

Whose Curriculum is it Anyway?

The NGA Summer Conference will take place in Wolverhampton on June 21st.

DAG will give grants to subsidise travel for 4 Governors equivalent to 25p per mile, to assist the attendance of interested Governors.

Application to attend the Conference is the responsibility of individual Governors.

For authorisation for DAG support apply to the Executive Officer David Tall by e-mail. Grants will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The venue is Wolverhampton Racecourse.  This is within 10 minutes of the west coast mainline railway station at Wolverhampton, and within 20 minutes of the M6 spaghetti junction.

The theme for the conference is the curriculum - the title is Whose Curriculum is it Anyway?

The way a school teaches subject content is the proper concern of the professional staff. But there are aspects of the curriculum that are the proper concern of the governing body.

This could be because these things go to the heart of the ethos of a school, or because they are part of a whole school approach to an issue or subject area. This NGA conference will look at some of these curriculum areas - Music, Creativity, the Environment, Learning Outside the Classroom, Community Cohesion.

Some of these things should be high on a governing body's agenda, particularly community cohesion, which became a new governing body duty at the start of this academic year. Others will shortly appearing on GB agendas; there will, for example, be new government advice on school trips and visits later this year. Other conference themes are things that should be central to any school's education provision, such as music and creativity.

In morning workshops we will have national leaders in each area; in the afternoon we will have speakers from the Citizenship Foundation, BECTA and the QCA. And we have some surprises, which are worth the journey, as those who attended the January NGA/NCSL conference can attest.

The NGA has been commissioned to manage this conference because the QCA and BECTA feel that governors should be more involved with the strategic development of the school curriculum.

As with all NGA conferences this event is free. but we remind you that this event is not restricted to NGA members. Booking will be essential and early booking is advised.

More information about the conference, including the programme, details about the venue, a booking form and a flyer, are available on the NGA website, and can be seen by following this link.
