Devon Association of Governors - Run by Devon Governors for Devon Governors
National Governors’ Association
The National Governors’ Council and the National Association of School Governors merged on 15 February 2006 to form the National Governors’ Association.
The National Governors’ Association (NGA) is the representative body for school governors in England.
The NGA works for governors by:
- Supporting local governor associations and governing bodies
- Lobbying ministers and policy makers
- Producing high quality guidance and information
- Organising events and conferences
Governors can join the NGA as individuals, as members of a governing body, or through their local governors’ association.
For more about the NGA visit their website at www.nga.org.uk.

NGA National Conference - 27th January 2010
This conference is aimed at SIPs (school improvement partners), Governor Services staff, extended schools co-coordinators, relevant professionals in government agencies, children’s services managers and governor trainers.
The Conference will address major areas in the 21st Century Schools White Paper, ranging from the new role for SIPs to the need for schools to communicate more effectively with Parents.
Governors are crucial in these policy areas, and the conference presentations will outline how professionals can work effectively with governors and governing bodies.

NGA Awards to Governing Bodies
For the first time in 2009 NGA will also be presenting awards to governing bodies. There will be three awards for governing bodies who have excelled in dealing with issues in the following categories: challenging circumstances, support for governance and exceptional projects. The closing date for nomination for the governing body awards in 12 December 2008.
The NGA Awards recognise the huge commitment made to schools by governors and governing bodies. The NGA is pleased that the Department for Children, Schools and Families has also recognised that commitment with financial support for the 2009 Awards.
The nomination forms can be downloaded from the NGA Events web page.
Alternatively you can contact the NGA Office by email at or by telephone on 0121 643 5787. Paper copies of both nomination forms can be obtained from NGA HQ.

Book Reviewers
National Governors’ Association – Book Reviewers Request/Opportunity
DAG has been approached to pass the following message to Devon Governors.
“We are looking for book reviewers for the NGA magazine. We regularly receive books on education and governance issues. We try to review a couple of books per issue and the work is currently falling on the same people. To write a review you need to be prepared to: Read the book; Write a short (400 word max) review to the deadline set. Which may mean reading and reviewing within a two week timescale. We have a professional editor who will beat your copy into shape - and edit it exactly for word length, so non-writers should not feel discouraged from volunteering.”
If you are interested please contact Phil Revell at .
It would also be helpful if you would copy David Tall at in any communication.
