New partnership aims to boost school improvement in Devon

Working Together for Better Schools

Friday 13 March 2009

A GROUND-BREAKING partnership between Devon County Council and school governors has been officially launched today.

The agreement - Working Together for Better Schools - formalises the relationship between the county council and Devon Association of Governors which represents the 5,000 school governors in Devon.

It is designed to promote sustained improvement in all Devon's 364 primary, secondary and special schools through closer working arrangements.

The partnership was launched at Newton Abbot College today when Devon's director of learning and schools, Judith Johnson, and the chairman of DAG and Newton Abbot College governors, Don Paterson, signed a formal memorandum of understanding watched by college students.

Devon's executive councillor for children's services, John Smith, said: "This undertaking will strengthen the partnership between the county council and Devon's governors who play a fundamental role in promoting continuous and sustained improvement in all our schools.

“School governors give up their time voluntarily and without pay to undertake a vital role in their communities - that of ensuring a quality education for local children.”

Mrs Johnson said: “We already work very closely with governors' representatives on DAG but this agreement formalises and develops that partnership.”

Mr Paterson said: “DAG is a powerful and influential independent voice representing Devon's governors.

“I very much welcome this recognition of DAG by Devon County Council as a county and national voice for school governors in Devon.

“This agreement ensures governors are well represented on a number of key decision-making county committees and working parties and sets out how we are to be involved in helping to plan education services and improving our schools.”
